Germany\u2019s domestic intelligence agency, the BfV, found that the ethnic-based view of identity widespread within the AfD contradicts Germany\u2019s free democratic order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the February federal elections, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party came in second, securing a record 152 of 630 seats with 20.8% of the vote. The BfV had previously classified the party as far-right in three eastern states, but now this designation applies nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BfV stated that AfD \u201cseeks to exclude certain population groups from equal participation in society,\u201d particularly noting that the party does not regard citizens from predominantly Muslim countries as equal members of the German nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla said the decision was \u201cclearly politically motivated\u201d and \u201ca serious blow to German democracy.\u201d Deputy faction leader Beatrix von Storch told the BBC it showed how \u201can authoritarian state treats opposition parties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new classification gives authorities expanded powers, including surveillance, communication interception, and the use of undercover agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marco Rubio responded on X: \u201cThis isn\u2019t democracy \u2014 it\u2019s disguised tyranny.\u201d Germany\u2019s Foreign Ministry replied simply: \u201cThis is democracy,\u201d emphasizing the decision followed an \u201cindependent and thorough investigation\u201d and could be appealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement stressed the need to confront radicalism, referencing the tragic history of the Nazi regime and the Holocaust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance, who met with Alice Weidel in Munich nine days before the election and voiced support for AfD at the Munich Security Conference, claimed \u201cbureaucrats\u201d were trying to destroy the party. \u201cThe West tore down the Berlin Wall together.
